Asuncion is the capital city of Paraguay. It is situated on the Paraguay River near its confluence with the Pilcomayo River at about 53 metres above sea level and has a population of around 500,000. Asunción is a major distributing and export centre. Cotton, sugarcane, corn, tobacco, fruit, and cattle products from the surrounding area are processed in the capital. Industrial plants produce textiles, vegetable oils, footwear, flour, small river craft, and tobacco products.
