Kourou is a city in French Guiana. It is situated on the Kourou River in the central north of the country and has a population of around 18,000. The local economy is basically agricultural, with coffee, cacao, and tropical fruits being grown. Kourou assumed some importance after 1970 with the completion nearby of the European Launcher Development Organization's Equatorial Space Range.
