Guayaquil is a major city and port in Ecuador. It is situated on the west bank of the Guayas River 72 kilometres upstream from the Gulf of Guayaquil on the Pacific Ocean and has a population of approximately 2 million people. It is the largest city and chief port and is the centre of Ecuador's international trade and domestic commerce. Industries include sugar refineries, iron foundries, machine shops, tanneries, sawmills, fabricating and processing plants for a variety of light consumer goods and Shrimp fishing. Bananas, coffee, and cacao from the Guayas River basin to the north are major exports.
