Esmeraldas is a major city and port in Ecuador. It is situated on the Pacific coast at the mouth of the Esmeraldas River in the north west of the country and has a population of around 140,000. The city is the chief trading centre for the region's agricultural and lumbering resources. It is the terminus of the 500 kilometre Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline from the oil fields in north eastern Ecuador. The city has an oil refinery and oil port facilities. Important exports are bananas and timber. Esmeradas' nearby seaside resort facilities are an important tourist attraction.
