Barranquilla is a major
city and port in Colombia. It is situated in the Caribbean lowlands 24
kilometres upstream from the mouth of the Magdalena River in the north
west of the country and has a population of around 1 million people. It is
Colombia's largest port along the Caribbean Sea. The port handles coffee
and petroleum from the interior and cotton from the surrounding region. It
is also the terminus of natural gas pipelines from fields in northern
Colombia. The cities main industries manufacture textiles, beverages,
cement, shoes, clothing, cardboard, and chemicals. |
