Ta'izz is a major city in Yemen. It is situated at the northern foot of Mount Subr at an elevation of 1,400 metres above sea level in the south west of the country and has a population of around 200,000. It is the centre of an important coffee growing district and kat (a mild narcotic) and vegetables are also grown in the area. Its industries include an aluminium plant, a biscuit plant and a soft drink plant. Ta'izz is the first city in the country to have a citywide purified water system.
