Latakia is a major city and port in Syria. It is situated on Ra's Ziyārah promontory that projects into the Mediterranean Sea in the north west of the country and has a population of around 220,000. It is the principal port of Syria. It is located on a good harbour, with an extensive agricultural hinterland. The city's exports include bitumen and asphalt, cereals, cotton, fruit, eggs, vegetable oil, pottery, and tobacco. Its industries include cotton ginning, vegetable-oil processing, tanning, and sponge fishing. |
