Port Vila is the capital city of the Republic of Vanuatu. It is situated on Mele Bay on the southwest coast of Éfaté Island and has a population of approximately 20,000. Port Vila is the political and the commercial centre of the island group. The city has hospitals, a cultural centre, a teacher training college, and a meat cannery. The city's economy is dependant on the tourism industry to a large degree, although exports of copra, cocoa, fish, and beef  play an important and increasing role in this area.
