Madang is a port on the north-eastern coast of  Papua New Guinea. It is situated on Astrolabe Bay  near the mouth of the Gogol River. Madang is the base for a large timber industry, which is logging the Gogol forest 40 kilometres inland.  Its' economy is based on the export of copra, coconuts, coffee, and cocoa. Industries in the city include engineering and joinery workshops, timber milling, and the manufacture of black twist tobacco.
