Invercargill is New Zealand's southernmost city and the commercial heart of Southland. Known far and wide for its hospitality, Invercargill is favourably placed on the Southern Scenic Route and is the gateway to some of New Zealand's most beautiful scenery and destinations including the Southland heartland, Stewart Island, Fiordland and the Catlins. Invercargill is Southland's major service centre and transport hub; the airport links travellers with other main centres within hours and trains and buses depart daily. Flat and easy to get around, Invercargill offers all the trappings of city life with few of the drawbacks. It offers an excellent range of shops, a focused business district, lively café/bars and restaurants and late night entertainment. The inner city upgrade has transformed the city centre into a modern, attractive and vibrant  heart of the city. The variety and number of heritage buildings in the city centre add to Invercargill’s character. Banks in Invercargill operate from 9-30am to 4-30pm Monday to Friday only, however there are many ATMs around the city which will take international credit cards as long as you have a pin number. Shops and businesses operate from 9-00am to 5-00pm Monday to Friday, although many shops open on Saturdays. It may also be of interest to travellers to know that there are no poisonous or dangerous wild animals in New Zealand.
