Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand with a population of just over 1 million people residing in the Auckland area. The city lies between the twin harbours of Waitemata and Manukau and is surrounded by ancient volcanic hills. Auckland is known as "The City of Sails", which is very appropriate when you consider that it has more boats per capita than any other city in the world. Auckland is currently the home of the Americas Cup. Auckland also boasts the country's largest shipping container port and the country's largest airport. The city is the retail and commercial centre of New Zealand. Banks in Auckland operate from 9:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday only, however there are many ATMs around the city which will take international credit cards as long as you have a pin number. Shops and businesses operate from 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday, although many shops open on Saturdays.
It may also be of interest to travellers to know that there are no poisonous or dangerous wild animals in New Zealand.
