Tarawa is a coral atoll and capital of Kiribati. It lies in the west-central Pacific Ocean, 4,500 kilometres northeast of Australia and is the most populous atoll in the Gilbert Islands with a population of approximately 30,000. The economy is based on tourism, copra, license fees from foreign fishing fleets and the interest on money earned from the now depleted phosphate mining.  Kiribati depends on foreign aid for most capital and development expenditure.
