Bora Bora is situated 240km northwest of Tahiti in the Leeward Society Islands. The main island, which has a population of some 4,500 people, is situated in the centre of a multicoloured lagoon, surrounded by many small islets inside a protective coral reef. The only channel navigable by shipping is on the eastern side of Bora Bora facing the main village of Vaitape. There is a  29km partially sealed road that circles the island, passing through colourful villages, archaeological sites, old Army bunkers and cannons left over from World War II. The island boasts 12 major resort hotels, and some of the best diving sites in the region.
