The Settlement is capital of Christmas Island. The island itself is an external territory of Australia with a population of around 1,500. Due to its remoteness it is exempted from Sales Tax and GST. The island is only 135km˛ of which over 60% is deemed National Park. The islands main revenue earners are phosphate and tourism. For a while a casino operated here, but it is now closed. It is hoped that a new Asia Pacific Space Centre facility will be set up on the island in the near future.
Businesses and shops operate 9-00am to 5-00pm Monday to Friday and the bank operates 9-30am to 3-00pm Monday to Friday. There are no ATMs on the island.
