Hobart is the capital city of the state of Tasmania. It is the most southerly of Australia's cities. Nestled on the west bank of the Derwent River it is best known as the home of the finish line for the annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race. With a population just short of 200,000 Hobart gives the feeling of being a small town rather than a bustling capital city. Hobart was the second city founded in Australia back in 1803, all be it as a penal colony. Hobart is the base for the administration of Australia's Antarctic program. The French regularly resupply their Antarctic base at Dumont d'Urville from the port, and American, Chinese, Russian and Italian ice breakers regularly visit. |
