Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory. It is the the most northerly of all Australia's cities sitting at a latitude of 28° 12" south of the equator. The city is surrounded on three sides by water and boasts a harbour twice the size of Sydney Harbour. Darwin is a small city by the world scale with a population of just over 70,000. The city is relatively new having been all but destroyed by cyclone Tracy on Christmas eve 1974. The weather plays a big part in city life in Darwin where it rains on average only 93 days a year but manages to drop up to 2000mm of rain in this time. The other 272 days of the year the sun shines and the temperature is a warm 32° C. |
