Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital city of the Kingdom of Brunei Darussalam. It is situated along the Brunei River near its mouth on Brunei Bay, an inlet of the South China Sea. It covers an area of approximately 5,765 square kilometres and has a population of around  280,000. It is an agricultural trade centre and river port. Brunei's economy is almost totally dependent on the exploitation of its vast reserves of petroleum and natural gas. In addition to its reserves of petroleum and natural gas, Brunei has rich deposits of white-quartz sand.
