Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan. It is situated on the banks of the Thimphu river at an altitude of 2,300 meters above sea level. It is the home to the Bhutanese Royal family, the Judiciary, several foreign missions and the government. The city's architectural design is protected by a unique law, which retains the forms and motifs of Bhutan's traditional architecture even in new buildings give Thimphu a delightful structural harmony. The capital's most striking visual landmark is the magnificent Tashichhodzong, which is the seat of the Royal Government and Central Monastic Body. A number of institutions in Thimphu such as the Royal School of the Performing Arts, the School of Traditional Painting and the Institute of Traditional Medicine offer the visitor an insight into Bhutanese culture. Thimphu would have to be one of the only capital cities in the world that does not have any traffic lights.Banking hours in Thimphu are from 10:00am to 1:00pm Monday to Friday. |
