Kandahar is a large city in southern central Afghanistan. It is situated on the plain next to the Tarnak River at an altitude of 1,000 m above sea level and has a population of around 250,000. It is southern Afghanistan's chief commercial centre and is situated at the junction of highways from Kabul, Herat, and Quetta. The city's main industries are food processing and textile factories. The main exports are fruits, mainly grapes, melons, and pomegranates. Other exports include cotton, madder, cumin seed, and asafetida. Kandahar also has an international airport.
