Herat is the capital city of Herat province in western Afghanistan. It is situated on the banks of the Harirud river at an altitude of  922 m above sea level, and has a population of approximately 150,000. Herat has wide main streets, extensive bazaars, and some light industry, including handicrafts, textile weaving, cotton ginning, and rice, flour, and oilseed milling. There is an active trade in Karakul furs.
