Jamestown is the capital city of St. Helena. It is situated on the north side of the island at the coastal end of a mile long and deep sided valley and has a population of approximately 1,400.  Jamestown was founded by the British East India Company, who established a garrison and built a fort at the site on James Bay in 1659. The main sources of revenue are customs duties, wharfage, and the sale of postage stamps to philatelists. Jamestown is the only port on the island. There are passenger and cargo services by sea to the United Kingdom and South Africa. The island has a system of roads but no airport or airfield.
