Mombasa is a major city and port in Kenya. It is situated on 14 square kilometre island in a bay of the Indian Ocean in the far south of the country and has a population of around 500,000. The city serves as the market for the region's agricultural products including sisal, cotton, sugar, kapok, coconuts, fruits, and vegetables It exports many of these as well as the products of north east Tanzania and Uganda. Mombasa's industries include shipbuilding and repair, metal and cement works, sugar processing, a fertilizer plant, and an oil refinery. |
