Banjul is the capital city of Gambia. It is situated on St. Mary's Island near the mouth of the Gambia River and has a population of around 50,000.It is the country's commercial and transportation centre. It has several peanut decorticating plants and oil mills and peanuts, peanut oil and meal, and palm kernels are exported. Tourism is also important. There are also many small local industries manufacturing wood carvings, filigree jewellery and hand-dyed cloth. |
