Alexandria is a major city and chief seaport in Egypt. It is situated on the Mediterranean Sea at the western edge of the Nile River delta 183 kilometres northwest of Cairo and has a population of around 3.9 million people. It is Egypt's second largest city and the centre of a major industrial region. Its economic activities include banking, shipping, warehousing. The city's main industries include textile manufacturing, an asphalt works, rice and paper mills, salt and tanning industries, an  oil refinery, a cement works, and limestone quarries.
