Ouagadougou is the capital city of Burkina Faso. It is situated in the centre of the landlocked country some 12° north of the equator and has a population of around 400,000. It is a city of large trees and modern public buildings abutting traditional residential neighbourhoods. It has a market, a crafts centre, the national museum, and the University of Ouagadougou. It is connected by rail to the Atlantic port of Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, and has an international airport. Major products include textiles, carbonated beverages, matches, and footwear.
